The exhibition traveled to the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, Ohio (February 8-April 26, 2009). Each kimono took almost a year to make, with an elaborate method of dying the fabric to produce both rich colors and detailed textures. The technique that was first invented in the 15/16th century is called tsujigahana (literally, flowers at the crossroads). Kubota's sons continue their father's work at the artist's studio, Itchiku Kobo, in Tokyo. Pictures don't do justice to the experience of the fabrics. |
